The first time I heard about Kashmir, it was through an old, tattered travel magazine at a café. The pages showed misty lakes, snow-dusted peaks, and vibrant houseboats floating like dreams. I never imagined that a year later, I’d find myself lost in the middle of a saffron field, with no phone signal, surrounded by the scent of blooming flowers and the distant call of a shepherd.
This is the story of how a 7-day Kashmir tour turned into an unexpected adventure one that changed the way I saw travel forever.
The Beginning: A Promise of Serenity
I had booked a well-planned Kashmir tour six nights and seven days of curated beauty, from the Mughal Gardens of Srinagar to the golden meadows of Sonamarg. The itinerary promised Shikara rides on Dal Lake, thrilling Gondola rides in Gulmarg, and pony treks through Pahalgam’s lush valleys. It sounded perfect.
But Kashmir, as I soon learned, has a way of surprising you.
Day 1: The Shikara Ride That Led to a Stranger’s Invitation
After landing in Srinagar, I was whisked away to a charming houseboat on Dal Lake. The Shikara ride was everything I had imagined floating past lotus flowers, wooden houseboats, and the distant hum of Kashmiri folk songs.
But then, my boatman, Ghulam, asked: "Would you like to see the real Dal Lake?"
Before I knew it, we veered off the usual tourist path, gliding into narrow water channels where locals lived in floating villages. He took me to a tiny floating market, where vendors sold spices from wooden canoes. As the sun set, an elderly man in a neighboring boat gestured for me to join him for Kahwa (traditional Kashmiri tea).
This wasn’t in the itinerary.
Day 3: The Pony That Had a Mind of Its Own
In Pahalgam, I was excited for a gentle pony ride through Betaab Valley. My pony, Raju, had other plans.
Halfway through the ride, Raju decided he preferred Chandanwari Valley instead. Despite the guide’s protests, the stubborn pony trotted off the trail, leading me through pine forests and icy streams.
At first, I panicked but then, I saw it.
A hidden glacial waterfall, untouched by tourists, its waters shimmering under the afternoon sun. My guide finally caught up, laughing. "Only Raju knows these secrets."
Day 6: The Snowstorm in Sonamarg
The plan was simple: a scenic drive to Sonamarg, a pony ride to Thajiwas Glacier, and back by sunset.
But Kashmir’s weather is unpredictable.
As I reached the glacier, the sky darkened. Within minutes, a sudden snowstorm swept in, reducing visibility to almost zero. My pony guide, Ali, quickly led me to a nomadic shepherd’s hut, where a family welcomed us with warm milk and stories of winters spent in these mountains.
For two hours, we waited out the storm, listening to tales of hidden valleys and forgotten trekking routes. When the skies cleared, the glacier looked even more magical blanketed in fresh snow.
The Lesson: Kashmir’s Magic Lies in the Unplanned
My trip was supposed to be a structured tour Mughal Gardens, Gondola rides, and Dal Lake sunsets but what stayed with me were the unexpected moments:
Kashmir isn’t just a place you visit; it’s a place that rewrites your journey.
Would I Recommend This Kashmir Tour? Absolutely.
If you want the perfect mix of comfort and adventure, this 7-day trip covers the best of Kashmir while leaving room for surprises:
✅ Shikara rides on Dal Lake
✅ Gondola cable car in Gulmarg
✅ Pony treks in Pahalgam & Sonamarg
✅ Mughal Gardens & hidden gems
But here’s my advice: Let Kashmir surprise you. Say yes to the unexpected. Who knows? You might just find yourself sipping tea with a stranger, chasing a runaway pony, or getting lost in a snowstorm—and loving every second of it.
Kashmir isn’t just a destination. It’s an experience you’ll carry in your heart forever.
